BIOCRYPTOLOGY®: Embedded security & privacy

Biocryptology® has been developed by trouble-shooting biometrics and it represents the highest level of identification robustness and security and privacy of any type electronic transaction. Truly next generation, Biocryptology® is a disruptive biometric-based authentication technology product that consists of proprietary identification and anti-tampering mechanisms combined with a unique encryption algorithm. The sum total of which provides extremely robust security addressing some major challenges facing IT and authentication applications today.

The name Biocryptology® has been registered with the goal of differentiating its architecture from that currently being used in biometrics. The term emphasizes the relevance of cryptology to make biometrics based identity verification and electronic transactions private and secure.

Hanscan has developed the Biocryptology concept in order to provide biometric authentication solutions which are based on the highest requirements of performance, security and privacy. In order to achieve that, Hanscan has developed an end-to-end security environment consisting of a central biometric service provider, the System Control Unit (SCU), and a range of peripheral devices to support access control, time & attendance and remote access applications. Hanscan has divided its product range into two main categories:

  • Physical (Access Control, Time & Attendance)
  • Logical (Logical/Remote Access, e-Transactions)

Based on these categories the following Biocryptology® system configurations are offered:

How it works

Biocryptology® is based on the principle that the conventional biometric information which is captured by the biometric device is transformed into a set of numbers which are constantly changing each time the biometric data are captured and processed.

Neither original biometric images nor templates are being stored, only these sets of randomly changing numbers. Hanscan’s algorithm converts the registered biometric information as a series of encrypted numbers, which do not relate anymore to the original biometric image or template, nor to any other information that could be related to a person’s identity. Only this encrypted code is stored in the System Control Unit (SCU).

For authentication, a biometric verification or identification takes place, depending on the chosen architecture. Hanscan’s biocryptic control unit is the only entity capable of verifying that the person operating the biometric device is in fact the same person that has enrolled previously with the same credentials.
